Macquarie Uni Students Read Mean Social Media Posts

Written by Dilini

Our video is a parody of Jimmy Kimmel’s famous ‘Celebrities Read Mean Tweets’ videos that became viral on Youtube last year. Over the last few weeks our blog posts uncovered the excitement and uniqueness Macquarie University has to offer. However a bit of digging around social media found that students do have some grievances to air! At the very least I think every student can agree that Y3A is definitely too far away.

Check out the video below!

Religious and Cultural diversity at Macquarie University

 By Shahzeb Rana

Macquarie University is home to many different languages, cultures and religions. It is a multicultural society, which allows students to have the freedom of religion. It promotes a safe environment for students studying at Macquarie University, with religious groups and activities going around in campus. For Muslims, there is a mosque located at E3A, and allows students to stay on top of prayers whilst on campus. Students during the year, may be absent due to religious reasons. Indigenous students may need to attend a ceremony if someone passes away in their family, and many Islamic students may need to attend the festival of Eid, so in these cases, students can get to get their content for their lectures or tutorials delivered to them after consulting with their lecturers or tutors.

Christian Union is a group which is located in Macquarie University, and is run by students with the help of the staff provided by the Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (AFES). This allows students of the Christian faith to practice their religion. Thus, showing that Macquarie University is a place where all students can practice their religion, and is hence, a place to study, along with practicing their faith.

iLearn

Written by Dilini

iLearn is the website used by students at Macquarie University for accessing teaching materials for there subjects. Often lecturers and tutors will refer to the units ‘iLearn page’ and this is where students will be able to find the unit guide, weekly reading, tutorial homework and lecture slides. Additionally the page also contains a link called ‘Announcements’ where the unit convener will post any important information. Some units will also have a ‘Discussion Forum’ where students are able to post their own questions which can be answered by other students.

One of the other main functions of iLearn, is Echo. This is usually found on the right hand side of each unit’s iLearn page and contains the recorded lectures from each week. If students haven’t been able to physically attend the lecture or wish to listen again to the lecture, Echo is the place to go. There is the option of pausing, fast-forwarding and slowing down the speed of the lecture.

Macquarie University Transport

By Shahzeb Rana

Wherever you live, there are many different ways to get to Macquarie University. The most common methods of transport are train and bus services, however students may drive too! Macquarie University has its own train station too, commonly known as ‘Macquarie University train station’, so it gives the flexibility for students to travel by train services with ease. Furthermore, bus services are also available, as it travels through the university on Balaclava Road, and some buses stop directly in front of the Macquarie University. Suppose if you travel by bus from the West, the easiest way to get to University is by catching the ‘611’ bus, which stops at Waterloo road, and runs through the Blacktown networks.

You may be thinking about all these travel methods, but what about the costs? Don’t worry, students studying at Macquarie University are eligible to get an opal concession card, made to make your trip cheaper. Every year, students may need to fill in a declaration form, in order to keep their concession card active. This keeps students travel for almost half of the normal fare, and allows students to remain active in their traveling options to Macquarie University.
